Solo Mage Vs Sarevok

Post by Jared4224 »

Hello Everyone! :D Spoilers!
I 'm about to enter Baldur's Gate (after killing Prat & co. In the catacombs) & I'm having a bit of trouble thinking up a strategy for killing Sarevok & his friends... I don't want to have to spam the Wand Of Monster summoning,(or cast a bunch of monster summoning spells) so please keep that in mind. My mage (conjurer) has hit the experience cap, & has basically every spell possible. That means everything from Magic Missile to Cloudkill. Thanks for your help in advance ;)
Edit: Okay now I ran into a bug that every time I would try to save or rest I would get the message
"you cannot save when resting, chapter informatives, or movies. I have to uninstall TOTSC to be able to save again, so now I can only cast up to Lv 3 spells... This is gonna be a hell of a challenge... HELP!

You need to cast summon spells and spam the Wand of Monsters

I appreciate your advice Xandax & Stworca, but looking at this from a Role Playing perspective, I don't think it's possible that one mage (Demigod or not) could have controlled about 70 monsters at once & still had the mental state to be able to bombard his enemies with magic missiles for about 10 minutes
Anywho, anyone else have any advice?
If your interested I am currently wielding the Dagger of Venom at a Thaco of 12,
I have an Armour class of 0, & I have wands of fireball, paralyzing, & Poly-morph. My magic resistance is at 30%

Here's the deal if I remember correctly:

Without TOTSC installed Sarevok has around 100% magic resistance.

If you're playing a solo mage that pretty much requires you to use a "cheesy" tactic. Maybe you could take him on in melee if you have a lot of potions like Potion of Cloud Giant Strength, Potion of Defense, Oil of Speed etc.

Darts of wounding would be be a good alternative mixed with invisibility-spells/scrolls/potions and some kiting.

Please keep us updated.

I would *love* to hear about a non summoning Conjurer solo'ing Sarevok :D
Sage plays a paladin,
because other classes would be frowned upon for laying their hands on a wounded companion

Well, if you kill Drizzt and take his boots of speed, you may kite-throw dart Sarevok to death.

(does anyone else than Drizzt have the boots?)

With his 90ish MR (non ToTSC) Sarevok is killable only with physical damage. Kiteing him is easier to do than meleeing with him. Unless you have bucketloads of Mirror Images, Stoneskins & Co.

In my experience, the Wand of Monster Summoning barely helped, and magic is nearly useless against Sarevok.

With that, I suggest that you use Algeron's cloak to charm his party members and then have them focus on Sarevok. Angelo in particular should be quite damaging.

During the battle, you may see Battle Horrors pop up. These guys are very tough and very damaging, however, a Wand of Frost should be able to fell them in three to four hits.

Anyway, I suggest that you bring a ton of scrolls and potions.

I suggest these potions:

Oil of Speed
Potion of Invisibility
Potion of Healing
Potion of Magic Blocking
Potion of Magic Protection
Potion of Magic Shielding

As for scrolls, you should bring these:

Mirror Image
Minor Globe of Invulnerability
Invisibility
Protection From Magic

What magic immunity lets you do, is run around the entire room, setting off traps, which will hurt Sarevok. And believe me, there are a LOT of traps in that room.

EDIT:

Stworca, I'm almost positive that Drizzt does NOT have any Boots of Speed on him.

Yep, and as far as I know, he's the only one that hose those boots.

Thanks to everyone who has given me advice. :D

Chreshinibon - I have also vowed to not use Algeron's cloak, or any charm spells in this playthrough. It'll just be One non monster summoning, non charm abusing Conjurer vs Angelo, Tazok, Semaj, & Sarevok... I can hear hell calling already  I will certainly keep you all updated on my progress. I suppose this is gonna end up to how many buffs I have, & if my trusty Dagger Of Venom can do it's job. :mischief:

That will make matters much more difficult, given the fact that the traps aren't enough to kill him alone, and your THAC0 is abysmal.

At least with bards you can backstab him and bombard him with arrows of detonation.

Ah yes, arrows of detonation. I forgot how ridiculous some BG1 items were

VICTORY!!!! I FINALLY BLOODY DID IT!!!:devil::devil:
ahem
I did it, I really did. It came down to buffing myself like crazy, separating Sarevok from his lackeys, drinking a potion of invisibility, stabbing him with the Dagger Of Venom, Potion of invisibility, stab, etc... until I ran. I sorta improvised at this point, I had a mirror image up, so I would run at him, stab, run before he could attack, & rinse & repeat. Eventually though... There I was, defenseless, no buffs, just a mage & his dagger, & I thought OH SCREW IT! I WILL NOT DIE AGAIN! & I foolishly charged Sarevok. Mystra, (or maybe mask) was helping me there, because my poisoned dagger earned me a critical hit. inflicted poisoned damage, & stopped Sarevok in his tracks. I just stood there in shock as he twitched at the poisons pain, & finally died...
Anyway, I have one last question, how do you load a saved game from BG1 to BG2? Thanks for all your help everyone

Congratulations.

To my knowledge, the best thing you can do is to take the character and biography files and copy them into the BGII character folder and then start the game.

You can also open your saved games folder in BG1 (forget the exact name it uses), copy the Final Save game file. Then open your saved game folder in BG2 and simply paste the copy of it in that folder. Don't worry it will not overwrite your BG2 Final Save game file. Black Isle used different numbering for BG2 game files.

Then start BG2 and during character creation choose the option to import a character from a saved game. That game file will display in the list. At least mine did. :)

Thanks to you all, My Conjurer Sigil Talagand is currently slicing up goblins in Irenicus Dungeon. :mischief:
Thanks to Chrenshinibon, Philos, Stworca, Avatar Of Light, a00krido, & Xandax for your help, support, (& in some cases, skepticism)

IIRC (it's been a while), I did it with a solo mage by pulling at least Semaj off individually... I might have pulled Tazok as well, but he's not difficult. Semaj, I used a potion of magic immunity (the blue one I think-- gives full immunity for 5 rounds or something like that), then pelted him with sling bullets or darts of wounding (mages don't have a lot of HP, and poison would mess up his spells). It's also possible I pulled him, then blew an Invisibility (potion/ring doesn't get interrupted), waited until his protections wore off, then used the potion of magic blocking to stop his spells, and pelted him MM's + sling bullets. Regardless, it's been a while and I don't recall for sure outside of pulling and killing him individually.

After he was dead, I just used a combination of Invisibility (Spells, Potions, Scrolls), MM's (I had 16 or so 1st-level slots from wearing two rings of wizardry), Sling +3/Bullets +2, Boots and Oil of Speed (to outrun him since it doesn't add attacks to mages for some reason) to take out Saravok one-on-one.

In retrospect, and I'd have to check his stats to be sure, but probably could've just buffed up and nailed him toe-to-toe instead, even with a mage... Sarevok isn't even the toughest fight in BG1.

And how exactly is this less cheesy than using the Wand of Monster Summoning?

Not saying it's wrong. Just be honest about what you're saying.
The problem is that the people with the most ridiculous ideas are always the people who are most certain of them.

Mostly because it's more "beliveable" then having the ability to have control over 50 monsters while fighting. Using invisibility spells & potions while attacking him at least seems "possible". Not really less cheesy, but makes more sense RP'ing wise.
