Lowest usefull AC?

Post by Ambiorix »

On some threads some people say that any AC (armour-class) below AC -10 is disregarded by the game. On other threads some imply that AC's below -10 are still useful? Quid?

Is there any point of having an AC below -10?

Thank you for your help.

Probaly not.

Well I always play around -7 to -10 Ac And I have noticed not any big difference in them. I think it would be better to focus on resistance to types of attacks like slashing. But some people can get some real low AC out there. I have never been to much for that myself. But as being a difference I am not to sure. ;)

At the early stage of the game, there's no point in having a too low AC, as all the enemies would need a critical in any case to hit you.
Progressing with the game, enemy THAC0s rise of course...
In ToB the average enemy hits you easily unless you have an AC
around -20 or so

You guys are probably right. I've just soloed trough the game with an AC that was never higher than -10. But still: is it true that the game doesn't take AC below -10 into account? Can anyone confirm this?

If you only have soa, they game doesn't count anything lower than -10, but iirc tob counts any ac you can get.
If I asked, would you answer? Its your problem. Its a deep, deep problem. I have no way to ask about that... I have no elegant way of stepping into your heart without tracking in filth. So I will wait. Someday, when you want to tell me, tell me then. -Bleach

Ya, basically cuz In SoA few things can hit -10, let alone -20.

I rarely go below -5 in SoA.

Ambiorix, AFAIK, the Infinity Engine limit of AC calculations is -20.
Therefor, there is no difference between -20 AC and - 24 AC.
I'm not sure, though - you need someone like Sabre or Sojourner (sp?) to confirm this.

I've been told by one of the people who works closely with TeamBG (who should know these kinds of things) that the lowest useful AC in Shadows of Amn is -10. I wasn't aware that Throne of Bhaal can recognize AC all the way down to -20. I, too, would like for an Infinity Engine expert to confirm or deny this.

I found that once you get around -13 or so mind flayers cannot touch you if you arent stunned. This is however not the case with -10, your brain gets eaten rather quick. This kind of contradicts what you guys have been saying, but I have patched ToB while playing SoA so Im not quite sure if this matters.

-13 AC and Mindflayers can't touch you with intelligence-drain? Gonna try this right away. Combined with the brine-potion or the (patched) greenstone amulet this should make me completely invulnurable to them?

I vaguely recall mind flayers having THAC0 7 or 8, so that could be right. They still hit you on critical hits, though (but you're so well-protected you usually gain Int faster than they can drain it).

Good thing that those Drow drop +5 shields and plate, eh?

Actually, the flayers usually don't hit you on melee attacks if you're no stunned. That's what makes them so powerful - they stun you, and while stunned, all attacks hit, and your brain gets eaten very fast. :D
