How to kill a liche...

Post by M0NSTA- »

I'm currently on the quest in the temple ruins, and on the first floor of the dungeons i have encountered two liches (not together thank fully).
One is in that little room just above all that lava on the floor (accompanied by a pit fiend) and another is just before the room with the floor maze (where you spell out amaunator, or what ever it is. Cant make it to the room :( )

Now last time I dont remember any liches here, so i'm guessing it has something to do with one of the mods i installed, but now they are here im rather stuck because i cant kill them. I use my fighter/druid with boots of speed on to get into his sight and wait for him to cast timestop then run around a corner. i do that twice then next time i get into his view a spell trigger activates and im dead, don't even get too see what he casts its so instantaneous. My best weapon is +3 and i try beating on him with this, but i can't even hurt him and any spell cast at him becomes 'spell ineffective'.

This is really really frustrating, i have keldorn lvl11, two lvl 12 mages, me fighter 12/druid 6-7 aerie lvl 10-11 or so in both classes and jaheira lvl 10/12 or something like that.

If you could suggest anything at all that would help me here i would be very grateful.

Have u tried polymorphing to a slime (100% magic resistance) and letting them waste some spells on you? You may want to cast protection from evil first for incase he gates a demon. There are also protection from undead scrolls that make you invisible to undead. As far as weopon innefective...assuming u r using at least +3 weopons (less wont work)...he may have cast protection from magical weopons. There are spells that would negate that protection. Breach or spell thrust, maybe? look at the spell descriptions. Dispell magic won't do it unless u r that special paladin class that gets high level dispell magic as an ability (Inquisitor?)

I've actually just started, so I've only fought the lich that has Daystar.

Another way to do this is with protection from magic scrolls. adventurers mart has 2. it doesnt negate weopon +'s...only spell effects.

Temple Ruins

Becoming a Mustard Jelly (with polymorph self, not that crappy cloak) always works with me, just seperate his melee friends before doing it...

BTW, the baddies in that area scale up with you, if your XP is a bit high... You're probably just above the cutoff for the "harder" Temple Ruins.

Haha i used that 'crappy cloak' to turn into a mustard jelly and didn't notice any magic resistance as well so i discarded that bit of advice from the site  , guess i'll have to try the spell.

Now my problem is a pit fiend who casts fireball that destroy's my party, it kills at least 1 member every casting of it and he is stuck in the room with the lich, and with a load of lava floor out side the room this is going to be a tricky fight... btw everytime i cast truesight i can see the pit fiend for about a second before he casts improved invisiblity again so i can't lower his resistance at all (every fireball or cloud kill i cast in 'their' room does no damage at all...)

Maybe i could sit outside their room as a jelly and take the lava damage while abosrbing all the liches spells until he runs out...

Other than that i'll walk all the way back to a shop and get some protection scrolls.

ps i have about 1,000,000 experience per party member, so i guess im above the 'harder' break point for dungeon badies, are all areas scaled up in difficulty depending on your experience ?

Many of them do (can't say whether they all do), and vice versa: some are easier if you complete them earlier in the game.

Ah yes, that lich... I remember that I had some trouble with him too, so here's what I did:
I first lured the pit fiend out with a fireball, and killed him quickly before the lich followed. Then I ran and waited until the lich went onto the lava. It interrupted his spells :D So then I sent my Carosmyr-wielding paladin to beat the bejeezus outta him. I had paladin(undead hunter) and Nalia. That's my whole party :)

This may be spoilerish, but you ask for it

I assume you have access to spells (divine/arcane) up to lvl 5?!

Pit fiend and lich can see through invisibility; so don't waste spell slots for this, it may be possilble to use mislead (very good for thief's backstab, well not in this situation as undead is immune; and is a lvl 6 spell. The good thing is it can not be dispelled, if the clone is out of range of true sight or other divination spells-> doors are your friends)

Okay, some thoughts on tactics

Be Patient! -> wait for lich protections to run out (most very good buffs only have duration of 4 rounds = 24 sec realtime.

Defence:

- cleric/druid fire/cold (1 spell of lvl 2, if I remember right) protection
- mage or cleric/druid (can't say exactly which class) lvl 3 fire prot. (this should stack with the afore mentioned
- prot. evil 10'
- barkskin improves saves (not against spells) and ac
- look up descriptions to find other suitable spells

Offence:

- glitterdust maybe able to break invi
- in the end I suggest to meelee them to death, so use haste, impr. haste on fighters
- melfs meteors (for 5 attacks/round and elemental damage) for Aerie/mages
- sunray, false dawn, holy smite

Desperate:

- use a character as decoy, cast Otilukes resilent sphere on him, when the bait is accepted your other party members can join the battle

and one thing I myself can't, but should be possible:

Ignore them, just use a hasted character to outrun them, get required items, break off to next lvl border

or use the suggested cheese (cloudkill from out of sight, scrolls of pro undead/magic, etc. ...)

Save Protection from Magic scrolls for other lich encounters. Those scrolls are very rare.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

The pit fiend should not attack you at all if you have "Protection from Evil 10 radius" (level 4 Cleric Spell).

The lich itself is immune to all level 5 or lower skills so remember that using a majority of your spells is pointless exercise. Also the reason he is immune to your weapons is his protection spells, most liches use protection from magic weapons so any weapon is useless against him for a time being, though sometimes "Melf's Minute Meteors" (Level 3 Mage) will blast right through that doing fire damage. Just wait a while and let his protection spells naturally time out.

While waiting I might recommend using low level summon monsters 1 at a time to lure him onto the lava pit and letting him simply roast to death, if he's too powerful for you then let him die but if you want the experience; then at the last moment launch an attack using melf's minute meteors or smacking him with the best weapons you have.

How to kill a lich?
Azuredge!!
Give that awesome anti-undead axe to Keldorn, haste and protect him from evil and send him alone to the lich. Dispell magic and hit the lich from afar with the axe: lich destroyed in a flash!

Anyways:
AzureEdge
Mace of Disruption +2
Daystar's Sunray Ability
Slime Polymorph
Protection Scrolls and bashing
Melf's Minute Meteor's +5 Ability
Dispel Magic overload/Carsomyr
Lure into set traps
Summon Swarming

Are some of the ones that come to mind atm

improved haste and azuredge...as soon as you see it, start throwing it, since most liches cast protection from magic weapons last, you got a good chance of disrupting them immediately.. :D

I think Monsta doesn't want to start a general topic, he just had a problem at hand, which was that he didn't want to go back shopping and his party was just lvl. 10 to 11.
By the way Monsta, did you already solve the problem? Would be nice to know.

This is not to flame any of the posters here.

Well this may look like slime, but as a long time reader and short time poster I must say:

KaaH the Snake bows to UU for knowing BG2 cheese inside out, thanks for letting others take part in it.
