Commander Shepard returns as the protagonist in Mass Effect 2, but this time he/she is saving the galaxy with the help of the pro-humanity organization known as Cerberus rather than the Alliance military. The shadowy leader of Cerberus, the Illusive Man, has provided Shepard with a brand new ship (the Normandy SR-2) and a number of dossiers for potential squad members.

With Cerberus' help, Shepard must assemble a powerful squad and bring the fight to a new menace called the Collectors. Whether the Collectors are working with the Reapers is a mystery, but their attacks on human colonies must be stopped. Since the Citadel council will not intervene, Shepard is humanity's only hope.
