California Literary Review gives the book a 3.5/5:
Ultimately, Gauntlgrym is a quick read with some very satisfying fight scenes. It's also deeply layered with emotional atmosphere. While it's not Salvatore's strongest book thanks to some stock characterizations and a general lack of depth, it's still a solid addition to Drizzt's ongoing story. The narrative arcs and ongoing tensions being set up suggest that the next two books in this trilogy might be well worth the wait. Salvatore is one of the best fantasy writers in the business, so odds are, he'll continue to wow us soon enough.
Furious Fanboys doesn't score it:
If you've ever read a Drizzt book, you'll enjoy Gauntlgrym and want to read the next books in the trilogy to see where the newly open road leads Drizzt. If you're new to Drizzt, this is actually a good starting point. Gauntlgrym comes highly recommended!
Read Between the Lines gives it a 4/5:
Gauntlgrym is good. I wouldn't really expect any less from a Drizzt novel. However, there is one problem that I still can't get over. I hate the time jumps. I absolutely hate it when things are skipped over that could have made an interesting couple of chapters. In fact, I would have rather have had this book as the second in the trilogy. The first book could have been some of the events leading up to Athrogate pulling the lever. Dahlia seemed to need a little more development, and we could have had some time getting to know Jessa and Nanfoodle. That said, the rest of the story was great. It's nice to finally see everything impacting Drizzt and a new, unexpected look at Jarlaxle. I'm really liking where this story is taking Drizzt. So should you pick it up? Yes. Definitely. Even if you're not a fan of Drizzt, it's well worth a read. However, you should have a little prior knowledge before jumping in.
And Gamertell doesn't score it, either:
It is worth reading if you've been reading the series from the start. Even if it isn't one of Salvatore's best, it is still Salvatore. That is cause enough.
