Series creator Ion Storm already tried the harder of the two options with Deus Ex: Invisible War. Attempting to blaze yet another trail, the now defunct Texas studio tried to streamline the complex RPG elements and fans, perhaps inevitably, screamed, '˜THIS IS S**T! It's nothing like the original. They've dumbed it down!'
Perhaps Ion Storm didn't quite get it right. Perhaps it was ahead of its time. But Invisible War still deserves credit for pioneering an approach to the action RPG that was arguably brought to perfection this year by Mass Effect 2.
Still, though, few fans appreciated what Ion Storm was trying to do, and this lends justification to Eidos Montreal's decision to look to the original Deus Ex for inspiration when creating Human Revolution. Although we're sure the designers will have had half an eye on the modern, story-driven likes of Mass Effect, Fallout and BioShock at the same time too. The plan is to recapture the freedom and meaningfulness of choice offered by that decade-old classic, while improving focus and reducing fiddliness.
