CD Projekt built its game own engine to allow for non-linear storytelling. The result is a story that branches in several directions depending on player choices, leading to multiple possible endings. In that succubus investigation, for example, if the player had already completed a certain quest, Geralt would've been able to identify a piece of shrapnel embedded in one of the corpses.
