Player advancement is represented with player levels. Each time player solves a puzzle, defeats opponent, finished quest etc. (s)he receives experience. After certain amount of experience is gained, player levels up. This is (almost) standard for RPG games. Players do not gain skill points through usage of specific skills but rather through redistribution of skill points that are gained after player levels up. Most of the checks in the game are for skills (actually all except ability score checks). This means that level is actually generic representation of how strong player is, but everything else is calculated through skills. When you fight, you use combat skills, when you mine you use skills, when you harvest you use skills etc.
