To answer a question he received on his personal Tumblr, Obsidian's project director Joshua Eric Sawyer has published a video on the reasons that lead to the current scarcity of history-based RPGs. 23 minutes of reasons and examples of why and how historical games can actually work (with a liberal dose of examples grabbed directly from MicroProse's Darklands) are embedded below, including a few book suggestions and a shout-out to an ongoing Kickstarter campaign of a historical JRPG based on American history, Americana Dawn:
