We’re now just a few days away from the planned September 9, 2020 release date of the Peril on Gorgon DLC for Obsidian Entertainment’s sci-fi RPG The Outer Worlds. And while during this year’s gamescom we got a chance to see some developer-narrated gameplay for this DLC, we can now also check out a number of hands-on previews and learn more about what it has in store for us.
Gorgon's map is one of the larger in the game, with various interior areas to explore and new weapons to play with as you weave your way through the detective-style narrative. It seems like an excellent first addition to The Outer Worlds, which will be joined in a few months by another DLC called Murder on Eridanos. The Outer Worlds will also nab an Xbox Series X enhanced version for good measure as well.
For those who love builds and combat, based solely on what I’ve seen so far, I wouldn’t expect anyone to make brand new Builds or come up with new and unique play styles, mainly because the new itemization options is more of the same. For this reason, the DLC is likely best recommended for players looking to dive deeper into the story aspects of Halcyon.
Another aspect of the DLC that makes it so engaging comes back around to Obsidian’s method for story delivery. It's fun, engaging and wrapped in some pretty dark, offbeat humour. However this time around, the narrative team is working hard to flex their mystery and noir narrative skills, so far to great effect. . I’ve been more engaged in this story arc than previously because of the skillful plot delivery. Just as I’m getting a handle on my next objective, the story presents a clue that leaves me with more questions than answers.
Unbelievably, although it felt like I’d been playing for only a moment, my hour with Peril on Gorgon was up. Leaving me with incredibly tantalising mysteries, a hardboiled, noir thriller of a plot that could blow The Outer Worlds‘ universe wide-open and the niggling, unresolved feeling of fear regarding the true nature of the Ambrose Manor, I set my controller down and started counting down the minutes until I could carry-on.
To put things mildly, Gorgon is a total mess. Wilhelmina said that the asteroid was a wreck, but I think she undersold it. It’s clear that the emergency evacuation took a major toll on the area, and the alarm was still blasting nonstop. The fact that the asteroid became a marauder magnet didn’t do it any favors, either. Chatting with the lone trader revealed that there there’s one marauder in particular to steer clear of, and that’s Charles from Accounting. By all accounts, he is in fact someone named Charles who once worked in the Spacer’s Choice accounting department. At some point, he traded in his calculator for a rocket launcher and became the most feared marauder in the system.
