Announced last year, Realmforge Studios and Kalypso Media's humorous dungeon sim Dungeons 4 is aiming for a 2023 release. And while we don't know the exact date just yet, we do now have this robust FAQ that lists the game's key features that include dwarven rivals, expanded game world, a new perk system, and a fresh campaign, all coming together to paint a fairly intriguing and pun-rich picture.
Check it out:
What is Dungeons 4?
Dungeons 4 is a wholesome Dungeon management game where unicorns mingle among the lush trees; the good side has the high ground and the dark side on Hill Doom has not lived happily after. Oh, come on, which troll has changed the script again? *cough*
In Dungeons 4, everything is EVIL – again! But everything is now bigger, better, and with even more dynamic Evilness™ – all while keeping the spirit of its predecessor with the return of the Absolute Evil and its trusted *cough* servant, the Dark Elf Thalya.
You know the drill: gather your evilness, unleash it upon the not-so-evil overworld, secure your fabulously evil Dungeon and bathe in evil laughter while the Overworlders perish. There’s no way some annoying little creatures named dwarves will stand in your way and raid your Dungeon! I mean, what? Get thee gone from my Dungeon, thou gold-grubbing pests!
What are the main features of Dungeons 4?*Please note, features marked with * might differ for the Nintendo Switch version.
- Toss a coin to the Dwarves™: The Dwarves have arrived to build their underground strongholds and the hardy little fellows (although they don’t like being called that) compete with the Ever-Expanding Evil for space and resources.
- Harder, better, faster, stronger: The Gameworld is up to four times larger* than before and there are many more creatures* of the Horde, the Undead and the Demons, eagerly awaiting the Bossy Evil’s orders. Snots will play a much more prominent role this time and are able to level up (less stupidity not guaranteed).
- Evilfication is coming to a (new) place near you: The Overworld is bigger than ever before*. Gain Evilness by beating Mini Bosses or heroes and use it to bring doom to the Overworld, wreaking your Evilfication across many new biomes. You’re already dead… NANI?!
- Let me upgrade you: An ability-based Perk system for Thalya grants her impressive new powers. The Absolute Evil can now enjoy taking over the world, governing its creatures and slapping subordinates even more with the customizable Evil Hand.
- Many ways to tell the story: A long campaign, narrated by the beloved English Narrator from previous titles, Kevan Brighting, paired with skirmish maps to challenge your rule as the Absolute Evil.
- Work together, slay together: 2-player co-op multiplayer* with both players managing one Dungeon together. All skirmish maps and the campaign are playable in co-op.
Why should I play Dungeons 4?
*The Absolute Evil has entered the chat* You should play Dungeons 4, because…
Everything is bigger! I can now control up to 2x times more creatures, all with new Demon & Horde spells, in an up to 4x times larger dungeon and overworld.* This allows for more creative space with more Dungeon environments (fancy a game of the floor is lava with the heroes?), trap placing with placeable triggers for the traps and more room for evilfication of the overworld across more biomes!
Speaking of heroes, the new dwarf faction is making their way downtown but I – the Trendsetting Evil who can now customize his Evil Hand – care very little about that! Also, my loyal servant and main protagonist of my evil sequel, Thalya, now has a new ability-based perk system, giving her impressive new powers. This allows for another approach to each mission, meaning you can replay the game of evil over and over again. MUHAHAHAHA!
Of course, Dungeons 4 keeps the nicely evil spirit of Dungeons 3, all whilst improving on many systems and mechanics. And – drum roll please – the beloved narrator from Dungeons 3 strikes back for the 20-mission long campaign (Thalya, why the long face?).I If you don’t want to be forever alone in my Dungeon, I’ve also added 2 player co-op multiplayer mode(PvE only)* for individual maps and the entire campaign!
TL;DR – the Dungeons 4 features in a nutshell:*Please note, features marked with * might differ for the Nintendo Switch version.

What are the basics of Dungeon Manager in Dungeons 4?
The basics of a Dungeon Manager are: Dungeon Managing *ba dum tsss*. In the humorous Dungeons 4, you control your evil creatures in your dungeon and upon the overworld. Managing the creatures’ needs and defending the dungeon from those pesky heroes are your main priority, whilst raiding the overworld and gathering evilness allows for researching new dungeon rooms, creatures, traps, spells and other interesting gadgets. See evil, hear evil, speak evil!
What is ‘Evilfication’ in Dungeons 4?
If you’re thinking “I don’t know what Evilfication is and, at this point, I’m too afraid to ask” – the Teaching Evil has got you covered! ‘Evilfication’ is an effect that spreads over the Overworld and visually evilfies it by creating evil biomes – with a beautifully evil new look for Dungeons 4! To achieve this Evilfication, you first must gain ‘Evilness’ by defeating an Evil Boss, such as Crystal Golems or those diabolic Unicorns; destroying settlements of the good, villages, strongholds, etc., and now also by defeating heroes! When the heroes resettle or the mini-bosses spawn again, the effect is reversed.
How does Thalya’s new perk system work in Dungeons 4?
Thalya comes with perks now. In the campaign maps you can find and unlock perks for Thalya, unleashing powerful effects which can give you a big shift in your playthrough experience.
Your greedy creatures ask for gold as salary? One perk allows you to pay them with Gurus instead!
Or, letting the undead minions explode when they ‘die’ sounds like a lot of fun as well…
Choose wisely! Thalya can only have 3 perks at a time, and you can only switch before starting a new map, not whilst playing a map.
This means ultimate replayability and being ultimately evil again, and again, and again – just in different ways!
What role do the dwarves play in Dungeons 4?
Dwarves are your new neighbors who won’t stop banging on the walls with their axes and hammers. The new hero faction competes with you for space and resources in the dungeon by building their own rooms, mining resources and attacking you – dwarves do have a short temper after all *ba dum tsss*
