Q: While the planned removal of the ALT-Tab does remove some risk of cheating, 3rd party programs (such as those allowing EQ to be played in a window) always arise to overcome this. Will there be a standard practice regarding these 3rd party programs, even if their purpose is fairly mild, i.e. mapping or macroing? (saying here that macroing is mild since skills are raised by points rather than repetition)
A: We have nothing set in stone here. Obviously there's huge difference between playing a game in a window and GEAR. (The latter would be bad, in case you were wondering.) (Ed - For the record, we've tested GEAR in DAoC, and found the results to be entirely unimpressive) ShowCamelot, which I am utterly certain will be developed, seems quite benign on the surface, and in a PVE situation mostly is. It's not exactly a hack, either, since it doesn't do anything but provide information. Should we allow those programs by turning a blind eye to their use? Think about it for a minute - if that program shows where other players are, it would be a huge benefit in a PVP environment. If you're launching a raid into unknown territory, knowing exactly where you're going is a tremendous advantage. We can't allow anything that will give a slim minority of players such a defining edge over more typical customers.
But we aren't ready to draw a line in the sand.
