Of course, combat is a big part of any CRPG, so after spending some time milling around town and talking to the inhabitants, I found out about a ring of criminals dwelling in a cave just outside the city limits. Taking up my trusty short sword (bought on the cheap thanks to some favors I did for the owner of the general store), I descended into a cave and was confronted by a rather hostile dark elf. With the depression of a single key, I drew my blade and found myself engaged in a pitched battle. Combat in Morrowind is surprisingly action-oriented - you can move freely while fighting, and the way in which you swing your blade, club, or other implement of destruction is based on how long you hold down the mouse button and the direction in which you're moving. This isn't to say, however, that the outcome of battles is entirely based on your reflexes. This is an RPG, after all, and therefore your stats in combat skills will determine how much damage you're able to inflict, and how often.
