Another aspect of the game that Spector and Smith were particularly proud of was the artificial intelligence of the non-player characters. The AI is designed to respond to sound and anything that is new to the environment. NPCs also react differently if alone or with another NPC.
"If a cat runs through a room on fire, the AI determines a presence in the room, notices the cat, notices the fire and checks to see if there is another NPC in the room to guage its reaction," Smith said. "The AI is capable of dynamic and branching conversations. There are more than 30,000 lines of dialogue or three times more than was in Deus Ex."
