Your progress is controlled via a quest log, which keeps track of everything you do. As well as the main quest, sub-quests are available from various NPCs you meet, depending on how you treat them. One young girl accosted our wizard, and extracted from our goodly hearts the promise of help in returning her to her home. Success led to an increase in our goodly alignment and some experience - aw, bless. We tried again later with a half-orc barbarian, and gleefully mugged her for cash, treading down the path of evil, mwahaha. It's the kind of dynamic you'd expect from a comprehensive role-playing experience, and the fact that it was provided without any DM-intervention just goes to show how well constructed the single-player game really is.
