To a great extent, the appearance that one is role-playing in a cRPG is every bit as illusory as thinking that you can drive anywhere you want to go in most racing games. It looks wide open, but stray from the path and Bigby's hand reaches down and plops you right back on course. It's not that you can't pretend to be someone else...of course you can. You can throw thees and thous around all day long if you wish. You can pretend you're evil and streak from shadow to shadow, and your subjective experience of the game will, in fact, be different.
