The Xbox is becoming famous for many things. One low-key but important one is that the system is something of a hotbed of Western RPG design. While the PS2 claims the best in the genre coming out of Japan, Xbox has Morrowind and its expansions as well as our Game of the Year for 2003: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Now, Microsoft's premier entry into the genre is on the horizon: Fable. Developed by Big Blue Box under supervision from gaming mastermind Peter Molyneux, the game promises to evolve the concepts behind Western RPG making and bring it all to a new level while keeping the game accessible.
When asked if Fable would be much like a console RPG, Molyneux responded "I love the Final Fantasy games. And I've loved PC games -- and, well, stuff like this always ends up sounding slightly rude -- I find that Baldur's Gate is a little bit too complex for me. But I still love the idea of them: this immersive world, loads and loads of different things to do." Hopefully, Fable can marry these two development styles into one whole.
