Q: "Easily the largest (and most profitable) group are games that cater to PvP- players. Bigger companies tend to go with the safety that PvP- games like FFX1 and EQ2 provide, while startup companies take a risk to produce PvP+ games like DarkfallOnline, Trials of Ascension and Frontier 1859."
A: That's a wrong assumption. There are no real PvP- gamers. Ask them and you'll see most of those so called PvP- ones agree that no PvE fights can match with the thrill and accomplishment feeling a PvP fight has! I think biggest companies are tending to go with the old style of PvE MMO's based on wrong market analysis assumptions. They simply think it's safer and a sure way to success to make clones of "proven" success games. And until someone will bring on the proof that PvP games can have bigger success than PvE ones, they'll continue to make EQ clones. It was simply just fate that first big MMO to be a PvE one, and everything happened after that was because they think EQ is what players really want. Well, I do believe that's wrong. Very wrong in fact! And I say that the first solid made PvP game will be such a tremendous hit, that will switch almost the entirely MMO market towards PvP MMOs.
