These days, it doesn't take a market analyst to see the writing on the wall for the once-promising MMORPG genre. With titles shutting down left, right and center, often before the development cycle is even complete, things seem mighty grim. However, it is my opinion that Cryptic Studios has the potential to be the scrappy underdog who makes it big with City of Heroes. Not only have they tapped into an idea that is more or less uncharted in PC gaming, they have done it with style aplenty. This is a title that is cut of different cloth than the usual fantasy-themes we're all so drenched in, and its cup runneth over with fun. Graphically, it's absolutely stunning and boasts the single most elegant urban simulation I've ever seen. Paragon City truly feels like a major metropolitan center. I have seen retail-released games in worse shape than the current beta, so I am confident that the launch will be smoother than most. Really, it's hard to go wrong with a game that looks better than all the competition, immerses you in all your childhood fantasies, and leaves you with a smile on your face when you log out. Now you'll excuse me, I just saw my emergency beacon in the clouds. It's clobberin' time!
