City of Heroes is a young online RPG, and if enough effort is placed in further fleshing-out its weaknesses then it will be truly worthy of praise. The recently announced expansion, City of Villains, promises, by means of allowing you to be a bad guy, to introduce genuine player-versus-player elements. This is a good start, and given how well executed the game's combat element is, could very much become the game's focus, over the next few years. As it stands now, though, City of Heroes is a fun enough diversion, especially if you're a hardened online RPG head that's tired of the demanding gameplay conventions common to the genre. It should be the breath of fresh air you're looking for. For the 30-day trial period, anyway.
The second is at Worthplaying, where the game received an 8.5/10:
Finally, there's a quibble that cuts both ways: subscribers were able to download the first major features update, but a release date for making the update live was a week later. It's a great idea to enable us to get the content on game exit (so we can start playing right away after the update), but not being able to use it yet was driving me nuts, but I guess in a way it makes sense to not overload the network and spread people's downloads over a certain amount of time.
Overall, from a scale of Pat Sajak to Bob Barker, this game is Alex Trebek without the mustache: sharp-looking, packed with features, witty, and fun, but with just a little something missing. It doesn't really detract from the total package, but it sure would be nice to have.
And the third is at Ninja Grapefruit with an overall score of 75%:
City of Heroes is a fun game and is available now for $49.99 (which includes 1 month free). The question is does the game have enough depth to make you want to pay the monthly subscription? NCsoft has announced an expansion pack, City of Villians, that will hopefully add this depth - bringing in Player vs. Player combat.
For now, City of Heroes, does not have the depth that will keep you paying a monthly subscription for 5 months and more - but it is a fun game and enjoyable for a while.
