Party members in The Third Age are totally upgradeable -- players will be able to improve their character attributes, weapons, and even their fighting styles. The turn-based combat system is of the classic Japanese RPG variety; employing up to three characters in battle at any given time (with others available in a tactical "swap reserve"), players can pick from a large range of melee, magic, ranged, and special attacks, as well as non-combat functions.
As characters use their abilities, they will earn their way toward new skills in the game's detailed skill tree. Likewise, as damage is inflicted upon enemies, a meter gauge fills up, which leads to the deployment of a "perfect' attack." No matter which characters are currently active in the battle, all party members still gain the benefit of experience when the fight is over. The experience is then doled out in the traditional RPG style to improve attribute scores like speed, strength, etc.
