There are three playable sides in Dragonshard, each with about 25 unique units. The Adventure style of units are the once that can be upgrades while Hero and Juggernaut units are more powerful ones that can not be upgraded. The three sides are The Order of The Flame (a amalgamation of several classic D&D races) the Shadow Elves (a race that sort of speaks for itself) and, in their official public debut on Tuesday at the press event, the Lizard Folk. This third race has a number of reptilian representatives, all the way up to the big guys, the dragons.
And a snip from IGN PC's article:
This second tier include those units that are basically stereotyped versions of D&D classes and races. Going back to a previous example, dwarven barbarians would be one of the adventurer level units. Each of these unit types has a specific role to fill in an army, whether that be a rogue that can find traps or a cleric that can heal friendly units. To keep with the same example, the dwarven barbarian is a flurry unit that can use area effect melee attacks, has magic resistance, but wouldn't be able to stand toe to toe with a more direct attacker such as a knight.
They're built in a city (which I'll get into more in a bit) from a specific building. In fact each building only produces one adventurer type along with his third tier unit followers. Unlike the heroes, adventurers do gain experience as they go through the game. As they level up, they'll be able to acquire new abilities and higher stats as well as the ability to call minions to their side.
