The world of Tabula Rasa is dynamic. Bane squads are always rushing toward the human base encampments, so there's always something to fight off. As you venture out, there are various fortresses and key points in the map that can be claimed by players. If you steal an outpost from the Bane, it'll eventually be reinforced with NPCs to help defend it. Then Bane activity in that area will drop as the front moves away. In this respect, players can venture out and alter the map. In fact, sometimes you'll get missions that are all but impossible unless you invest in the time to take over some of the map (or get some friends to do it.)
And a snip from RPG Vault's article:
As befits a science fiction-like setting, you'll have a variety of guns at your disposal. Ranging from the fast but weak pistol to the long-range and powerful rifle, your weapon choice is an important consideration when sizing up the opposition - I particularly liked the flamethrower, which sets foes ablaze in a cone-shaped area. Targeting and attacking is a mix of first-person shooter and RPG; your reticle snaps to a close target, and your hits and misses are determined by the traditional behind the scenes dice rolling, which takes movement into account. The interface is minimal, giving you an unobstructed view of the battlefield.
