Richard Garriot is famous for his involving background stories in his games, and you shouldn't be fooled by the relatively simple concept of letting humanity fight an alien force. Garriot has created a world complete with its own alphabet and language. Among other things I noticed an obelisk with alien letters written on it, and part of the game is actually learning the alien language and thereby being able to access their powers.
Another interesting idea is the option of saving your character. This has practical purposes if you want to experiment with some new skills and weapons and find out that it doesn't work out. If that's the case you simply reload your saved character.
