Ken Levine and his team of wacky Australo-Bostonians have had a special place in our heart for quite a few years. With a focus on consistently tight designs their games have always managed to keep our interest from start to finish. This year the gang at Irrational Games turned their attention to two sequels, one for their own property Freedom Force and another for the venerable SWAT franchise. Though they represent two very different genres, we recognized both games for inventive design and terrific atmosphere. Though neither Freedom Force vs. The Third Reich or SWAT 4 managed to win their respective genre awards this year, they nevertheless each qualified as runners up and stand as high marks in their genres. Irrational Games is one of those rare developers that have built up a catalog of consistent winners year after year. If they manage to keep putting out games like this, we're in for years of great entertainment. We can't wait to see what they have in store in the future. BioShock anyone?
