We chose a nightblade from the Necropolis sect for our first character. A popular character from the Mage Knight novels, Kerraii, had a really interesting mix of Necromancy and Vampirism (and she was hot) that we though made for a great character class, but instead of taking that exact character from the fiction, we created Kithana, who borrowed heavily from Kerraii in her look and feel, but had her own storyline and abilities specific to the game we were creating.
