But let's talk about the actual dungeon they showcased. Actually, it wasn't a "dungeon" proper, but more of a shadowy, almost tropical cliffside grotto with some ancient-looking ruins, sheer drops, creaking lifts and bridges, and lurking beasties. While evocative of Elder Scrolls IV, this little pocket of adventure was arguably moodier than your average Cyrodiil crawl, and also much more expansive. Recall that in Half-Life 2, the Combine tower in City 17 was actually rendered in 3D, even though it was a massive and distant object. The area in the Dark Messiah demo was large enough (and vertical enough) that wandering off the edge of something might just get you dead. In fact, one of the first things we did was take a lift across a gaping chasm to go sneak up on some guards, where we witnessed those fun spell tricks I mentioned earlier. I think my favorite is going to be freezing the ground so that the guy slips and falls right into the abyss. Nothing like watching someone end themselves just by trying to approach you.
