In a nutshell, the Summoner is the lovechild of Diablo's Necromancer and World of Warcraft's Warlock. It gives players the option to either swarm enemies with an array of lesser minions or focus on harnessing the power of a single, greater Demon.
While that may sound like there are two primary ways to play the Summoner, that's hardly the case. Each of the five greater Demons a Summoner can control, and the five Elemental minions, has its own strengths that can overlap and complement other pets in a Summoner's army. This allows for many different combinations and thus many different ways to approach the class.
