Thorin Oakenshield left his home-in-exile in the Blue Mountains to reclaim his ancestral dwelling, the Lonely Mountain, from the dragon Smaug. In his absence Thorin's Hall was subjected to an attempted coup by the Dourhands, an impoverished and outcast clan of dwarves that originated in the Blue Mountains. Aided by the sons of Elrond Half-elven, Dwalin, one of Thorin's companions in the Quest of Erebor, wrested Thorin's Hall back from the Dourhands and revealed their treachery.
Since reclaiming Thorin's Hall, Dwalin and company established a permanent garrison in their Blue Mountain stronghold. This military presence, known as the Blue Stone Garrison, wards against incursions by the goblins of Ered Luin and the Dourhands encamped in the ancient and ruined dwarf-city of Sarnúr. Recently, the Garrison has begun recruiting allies from other parts of Middle-earth to aid in its struggles against the Dourhands.
