First and foremost, Peter Blood has a strong spirit. He is very smart, resourceful and persistent. At the start of the game, the players see him just before he leaves for Barbados. He is not a captain yet; he is still a slave, although a privileged one. The reason for this is that he's the best physician in the town; consequently, he is allowed to leave the plantation and move around the colony. He can enter any house, go to the tavern, docks or a store, or even leave Bridgetown. The problem he faces, however, is that there isn't anywhere he can run. He needs a ship, a crew and some money if he wants to get away.
Blood prepares to make his escape on his own, but realizes he must find some men who want to sail with him, and also obtain some weapons. Moreover, he has to find a free man who is willing to buy a vessel for him. Of course, he will have to overcome a number of obstacles; for example, one of the potential crewmates is about to be sold to a different owner, and another doesn't want to work with him. In such instances, the player often has two possible courses of action. One is to help the NPC and earn his trust, the other to persuade him to join. There are also different ways in which to arm himself, including both peaceful as well as aggressive approaches to solving this problem.
