Like Depths of Peril, Kivi's Underworld is a small-budget title sold at a budget price ($19.95), but it's just as fun as many of the full-priced big-budget studio releases. The game doesn't bring anything truly new to the genre like Depths did, but it makes for a fun (and oddly addictive) entry that will appeal to those looking for some hacking and slashing in short bursts, and to people with few experiences with the genre. It's also a nice action game for the younger crowd, so if you have kids bugging you for a new game to play, Kivi's Underworld is an inexpensive (and kid-safe) title that will keep them distracted for quite a while like until school starts again and they stop bugging you at home all day.

The game has a great presentation. Screenshots do not do the game justice, because they've done a really good job with character animations and particle effects here. (Check out the Youtube video below.) The default graphical settings are tweaked low so that the game will run on a large range of computers, so make sure you increase the resolution and turn on the effects. The sound effects and music are excellent too. My favorite thing is the voiceover while tells the story between levels. We need more voice acting in PC games!
I'm really happy with Kivi's Underworld. I'm impressed with what Soldak has managed to put together in such a short time period. This is a great game, and an excellent value.

As it stands though, Kivi's Underworld is an awesome addition to the Depths of Peril series and will no doubt be well-received by fans of the genre. You can have the same amount of fun in a 20-minute session that you can in two hours, an attribute that's pretty rare even in action-RPGs. The graphics and sound are awesome for an indie game, much better than its predecessor. The overall polish given to this title really enhances the entire gameplay, making it a great casual game even for someone who winces when they read the letters "RPG."
