Blizzard sometimes creates games that refine formulas established by others. However, in the case of Diablo, they actually created a sub-genre: the action-RPG. Instead of turn-based gameplay, the hack-and-slash style of continuous action of Diablo became a huge hit.
Diablo's innnovation along with the fact that it was just fun to play, created a host of imitators. While some have made improvements to the action-RPG design, none have really achieve the same kind of popularity that the Diablo series have reached.
