What I quickly realized after seeing Mass Effect 2 in action for a few minutes is that this game, months from its launch date, already looks and feels more fleshed-out and complete than the first did when it was released. The environments have slicker lighting and visuals, the player will visit a wider range of locations, the new limited-ammo heavy weapons will add some fun to the firefights, the tensions between the game's various races has already been established and can now be more subtly and carefully built on, and the combat is smoother and offers more to both action gamers and RPG fanatics. The uncharted planets in Mass Effect bored me to tears. One can only hope that they'll be more fleshed out in ME2.
It was only barely touched on, but we did hear that the game's side-quest planets will have much more to do. This was probably the biggest disappointment of the first game, as most of the secondary planets only had a few basic combat encounters and some were so inhospitable that they were a chore to navigate in the MAKO. The team's not really going into detail on how much better this element of the game is, but it seems pretty safe to assume that they understand people's concerns and are working on it.
