One component to the RPG side of the game is upgrading your guns to dish out the most damage with them. At one point, I had a machine gun, which was dangerous enough, but I also was able to add ammo that supplemented the physical damage caused by impact with a foe with secondary fire damage. Much like an MMO, you'll always been looking to build up your arsenal with such enhancements and improvements, so you'll be more capable in the field.
Another aspect of Borderlands' RPG design is the skill tree. You start with four basic character classes soldier (straight-up fighter), hunter (has a (pet) to assist with offense), siren (magic user) and tank (heavy on taking and dishing out damage). Each has a specific built-in skill, such as the siren being able to do a (phase walk) for temporary invisibility. However, as you get experience from kills, quests and other encounters in the world, you can then go into your character's skill tree to tweak and build your perfect fighter. How you allocate points among the various skills will shape how your character will be against adversaries in battle. Perhaps you want to boost the character's armor at the sacrifice of his offensive powers. Or maybe you'd rather focus on a specific attack skill, while giving up on diversity fighting.
