You can also become a trader. Various items - such as wood or scrap metal - are worth more in some settlements than others. The map provides a handy interface to show who is paying what in the towns you've visited - so you can take advantage of it by filling up your truck's cargo capacity with the right materials. Since the game saves it for you, it also means you don't have to keep track of it yourself. Those supplies will often pay for the repairs and fuel you'll need to keep going (you can repair and refuel at the various gas stations around the countryside, also marked on your map, but you can't sell goods there).
The background to the game - along with the visuals for the world - I found completely fascinating, and rather unique among "post-apocalyptic" settings. Yes, the old world has been destroyed, and much of its knowledge lost. However, there are still bright, sunny days, and for the most part, people are rediscovering and rebuilding. Power lines cross the countryside, cities have observatories and museums, and production is growing. That helps put the depredations of the bandits into further relief, encouraging you to make a stand and help the world rebuild.
