Walkthrough

You'll begin this quest in the ruined city of Elderhollow (#1). You won't remember who you are or how you came to be in the house you're in. When you explore your surroundings, you'll find an Iron Dagger and a Sealed Note in the chest next to you. The note will direct you to meet with Maddock in Aridell. If you head into the backyard of the house, then you'll also find two Torches in a barrel, plus some potions, Leather Sandals, and a weapon appropriate for your class in the hollow tree stump next to the well.

Aridell is located to the northeast. You'll find Maddock in a house at the southern edge of the city (#2). When you talk to him, you'll earn 300 xp, and he'll allow you to loot his chest, where you'll find a 2nd Sealed Note plus a Pouch of Gold (worth 300 gp). The note will indicate that you should next track down a special amulet, which is housed in the Family Crypt in North Parish. This is covered in the next main quest, Strange Amulet.

Note: The 2nd Sealed Note will also inform you that you're involved in "something very big," and that your memory was erased on purpose. You still won't know who "E" is, who has been sending you the notes.
