You move your lockpick to the "down" tumbler and then move the lockpick up (again move it with your trackball). It either falls down pretty fast (which means you did not hit the right spot [which is determined by your skill]) or it'll go down slowly.

If it goes down slowly you have to VERY FAST ...

Try the merchants in the various mage guilds. I think in one of those I found a merchant with more than 2000 gold ... though I can't remember the town anymore

Basically what you should do before every sale - try to sweettalk :) Get your standings with the merchant as high as possible, and always haggle - sooner or later your mercantile skill will raise and you can haggle for even better prices - and off course try to go to the same merchant over and over ...

I've done the very same thing for some time and didn't have any problems so far - as it seems quests are not time-bound. So basically I kept an item until I found an upgrade and then went to finish the quest :)
