It's really more of a choice on your part than anything else.
I would tend to say that vs. evil is a better all-around choice since a lot of faction-style monsters (e.g., goblins, orcs, etc.) tend to be lawful evil. At least that's how I remember is in 2nd Ed.
Then again, a lot of powerful things ...

I agree, magic and intelligence both take a lot of work to gain. However, i've had the pleasure of playing with some gifted spell casters and they make the difference in any game.
