I've been the good guy in just about every other game I've played. D&D is the one game where I take a walk on the dark side. Where I can say "Look! There's the hero! Let's kill him, shall we?" (Granted, you can be evil in other games, it's just not as fun.) So no, I really don't want be a hero yet ...

What lvl. is the party? Maybe the Necromancer is a lich? Perhaps he bribes the party upon reaching him with an insane amount of richs or a position/item of power.
