Clerics exist for healing. They're clearly vital at low levels when one hit (especially if prone) can murder you. However, do remember two things...

My Rogue doesnt have shield proficiency, but I can still equip a magic shield.

If you're not proficient with a shield (or armour for that matter) you should receive the armour check penalty towards any strength or dexterity...
