GameSpy, 4/5.
This is what I like to see in DLC: not just a few new weapons and hats, but a self-contained adventure with new areas, new characters, and a little souvenir to remember it by. With the next DLC pack already announced, Reckoning's future's looking bright. Your move, Skyrim!
The Paranoid Gamer, 3.5/5.
The Legend of Kel is a breath of fresh air to the Kingdoms of Amalur universe and a piece of content any fan of the title should think about picking up. With a 3-5 hour main quest and a variety of well done side missions, this piece of content is sure to entice fans of this fantastic new IP. Here's to seeing we see more fresh new content grace Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.
Just Push Start, 8.5/10.
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning's first DLC offering is a winner. Depending on the time put into side quests and general exploration, The Legend of Dead Kel provides 6+ hours of fresh new gameplay. Over those several hours, players will encounter new enemies, gain gorgeous new loot and even become the leader of their own upgradeable fortress. With the plethora of entertaining content present here, it's somewhat disappointing to find out that the story running through it all is not too engaging. Still, this is exactly what DLC should be like and I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say that I can't wait to see what 38 Studios has planned next.
SplitKick didn't enjoy it, 5/10.
The lone bright spot in the DLC is Gallow's End itself. With locales ranging from Pacific Northwest inspired forests to appropriately shipwreck-themed beaches, it is easily the most beautiful area in Amalur to date. The setting is also helped by being simultaneously more compact and inhabited than Reckoning. As much as I appreciate the art, however, it can't possibly justify $10. No matter how much you like Reckoning you should let Dead Kel continue terrorizing the waters of Amalur.
Finally RPGamer offers some mixed scoreless impression:
When I was finished, I found myself wishing I'd played it earlier during my original playthrough of the main game instead of afterward. There was little challenge for a post-ending character on the default difficulty, but even more problematic was the lack of any new equipment upgrades. It was a fun four hour romp, but I don't think I would have felt bad had I passed on it.
