Most combat spells are area-effect and work better with the ranged combat dynamic than spells that attack individual units. When you want to use a fireball, for example, you place a marker on what you want to be the center of the explosion. Once placed, triangle markers will indicate which foes fall under the range of the spells effects. If the baddies move out of that area before the spell goes off, that triangle marker goes away. Sir-Tech makes great use of color-coding, as each character has a different colored indicator. This way, you can make sure you have spread the pain out fairly amongst the enemies before ending your turn. It's a simple, effective visual feedback device that helps you coordinate your attacks.
