Background
You'll receive this quest from Vesemir when you ask him about other witchers during the Prologue. (If you don't pick up this quest from Vesemir, then you can get it from the Reverend in Chapter I.)
Walkthrough
You'll hear tidbits about Berengar during the course of the campaign, but you won't be able to complete this quest until Chapter V. Listed below are some of the places where the quest will update.
Chapter I
The Reverend will tell you that Berengar agreed to defeat the Beast, but that instead he ran off without doing anything.
The Salamandra boss will tell you that Berengar was captured by the Salamandra, and that he was "talkative" before he escaped.
Chapter II
Jethro (in the
Temple Quarter prison) will mention that the city guards found a silver sword at Thaler's pawnshop. Thaler will claim that the sword didn't belong to Berengar, but that he got some of Berengar's other possessions from Ramsmeat. Ramsmeat will claim that he found the items, and that you should talk to the people in the
Swamp Forest.
Vaska (in the
Swamp Forest) will tell you that she found Berengar's gear in the Clay Pits, covered in blood. When you visit the clay pits, you'll find two mutilated corpses there, and you'll decide that Berengar must be dead.
After completing the quest
Force Recon, either Siegfried or Yaevinn will tell you that Berengar is still alive.
Chapter III
At the end of the quest
The Unforgiven, you'll learn that Berengar was sent to
Lakeside to hunt for Alvin.
Chapter IV
You'll finally meet Berengar in this chapter, but he won't appear to like you (or anybody else), and he won't talk much. Dialogue options with him will open up as you progress through the chapter, but eventually he'll admit that he gave up the witcher secrets to the Salamandra because "they paid me well."
At the end of the quest
The Paths of Destiny, Berengar will confront you, and you'll have to make a choice: to let him go or to kill him. This decision will affect your battle with Azar Javed in Chapter V (see below). If you kill Berengar, then you'll find
Berengar's Medallion on his corpse.
Chapter V
The quest will come to an end when you finally face Azar Javed in the
Catacombs under the
Old Manor. Either Berengar will help you in the battle (if you let him live before), or you'll discover that
Berengar's Medallion has a weakening effect on Javed, which will make the battle against Javed much easier to win.
