1 - Overlord's Gate
This gate will start out locked, and you'll only be able to open it using a quest object called
The Overlord. This object is a random drop during the final battle in the game, and so it'll be a while before you can reach the
Secret Passage (Exit C) -- at least on the "normal" difficulty setting.
The Overlord will stay with you and work on the other difficulty settings, and so once you've acquired it, you'll always be able to open the gate.
2 - Abderus
Abderus (#2) will trigger the side quest "The Torch-Lighter's Gauntlet." He'll tell you that he wants to light the beacon (#2a) to let people know that the harbor is safe, but that every time he tries to get to it, he is swarmed by the undead. He'll then ask you for your assistance. If you talk to him a second time, then you'll agree to help, and a "torch-lighter" will begin following you.
Your goal is to take the torch-lighter to the beacon, and to there guard him from a couple waves of undead attacks while he lights the signal fire. If the torch-lighter gets killed, then you'll need to return to Abderus to get a new one. Once the beacon has been lit, when you return to Abderus, he'll reward you with an arcane formula and 30,000 experience points.
