Overview
As you approach the entrance to Abazigal's lair (Exit A), you'll be stopped by Abazigal's son, Draconis (#1). No matter what you say to him, he'll attack you. Draconis will start out as a high-level mage, but once you've done enough damage to him, he'll transform into his true form -- a brown dragon. That means you'll have to defeat him in back-to-back battles.
The good news is that Draconis' dragon form won't start out at full health. He'll inherit the mage form's health -- that is, a low amount -- and then he'll cast Heal on himself, which will only put him somewhere over half health. So if you buff up beforehand (or while you're fighting the mage form), if you summon help (after Draconis' initial Death Fog spell has worn off), and if you can remove Draconis' buffs (both of his forms will immediately trigger Protection from Magical Weapons, among other things), then Draconis should go down relatively quickly. You'll earn 61,000 xp when he dies, and you'll find Draconis' Head and
Tzu-Zan's Bracers on his corpse. The head will allow you to enter the lair.
Note: If you have a lot of trouble with Draconis, then you can always kill him with traps. Just place some Spike Traps (or whatever you have available) on the stairs leading to the entrance, and then when Draconis switches to his dragon form, simply flee away from him so he has to walk over the traps to get to you.
Another Note: If you're playing the EE, then when Draconis switches to his dragon form, he might appear right on top of your melee fighters and prevent them from moving. To avoid this, just back away from Draconis when his mage form is near death and finish him off with ranged attacks.
Inside the lair, you'll immediately get spotted by Ekim Cyre (#2), who will sound the alarm. This will cause three nearby doors (#3, #4, #5) to close and lock. Then Cyre will transform into a greater werewyvern, and he and the six lesser earth elementals in the area will attack you. You'll earn 28,000 xp for defeating them, and you'll find an Empty Breath Potion Flask on Cyre's corpse.
To move around the lair, you'll have to navigate some underwater tunnels (Exits B - H). Some of these tunnels are short, and you'll be able to swim through them right away. But others are longer or darker, and you'll need a Breath Potion and sometimes a Rope to pass through them. You can get the Breath Potion by taking the Empty Breath Potion Flask (#2) to the breath potion pool (#7) and filling it up there. You'll receive the Rope when you talk to the monk in the prison (#9).
Before you can face Abazigal, you'll also need to pick up a Scroll of Reversal (#11). This item will allow you to remove the geas on Abazigal's guardian, the green dragon Fll'Yissetat (#14). After curing or defeating Fll'Yissetat, you'll gain Abazigal's Wardstone, which will grant you access to his inner sanctum.
When you confront Abazigal (#16), he'll be in his sanctum with eight frost salamanders. Just like with his son Draconis (#1), he'll start out in human form -- just as a fighter instead of a mage -- and then once you've done enough damage to him, he'll transform into a blue dragon.
We'd recommend defeating the frost salamanders first while your tank distracts Abazigal, and then focusing on Abazigal. His fighter form will hit you hard, and his dragon form will do regular dragon things, but nothing here should be especially different from what you've faced before. You'll earn 72,000 xp for defeating the salamanders, and each character in your party will earn 40,000 xp when Abazigal dies.
After the battle, the Solar will summon you back to the
Pocket Plane and continue your education. This will earn each character in your party 10,000 xp. Then the Solar will send you back to the inner sanctum (#16), where you'll find a convenient exit portal (Exit I) waiting for you. Before going through the portal, don't forget to loot Abazigal's corpse for
Blue Dragon Scales, a
Flail Head (Electric), and
Gram the Sword of Grief +5.
Cespenar in the
Pocket Plane can use the dragon scales to craft
Blue Dragon Plate, and he can use the flail head to craft the
Flail of Ages +5.
1 - Draconis
2 - Ekim Cyre
Cyre will turn into a greater werewyvern when he spots you. He'll drop an Empty Breath Potion Flask and a
Stone to Flesh Scroll when he dies.
3 - Locked Door
This door will lock when Cyre (#2) spots you entering the lair. To open it (on the far side), you'll need to talk to the monk in the prison (#9).
4 - Locked Door
This door will lock when Cyre (#2) spots you entering the lair. To open it (on the far side), you'll have to acquire the Scroll of Reversal from Iycanth (#13).
5 - Locked Door
This door will lock when Cyre (#2) spots you entering the lair. To open it (on the far side), you'll need to deal with Fll'Yissetat (#14).
6 - Bone Fiends
You'll encounter a pair of bone fiends here. You'll earn 24,000 xp for defeating them. On the table next to them, you'll find a
Stone to Flesh Scroll.
7 - Breath Potion Pool
If you interact with this pool while carrying an Empty Breath Potion Flask (#2), then you'll gain a Breath Potion.
8 - Olhydra
In this chamber, you'll encounter two greater water elementals plus the water elemental Olhydra, who will protect itself with a blue fireshield. You'll earn 47,000 xp for defeating the three elementals. You might also encounter some kuo-toan enemies here, including a kuo-toan priest, but they'll probably rush out while you're fighting other enemies.
9 - Prison
Inside the prison here, you'll meet one of Balthazar's monks. No matter what you say to him, he'll give you a Rope, and he'll tell you that you'll need it to pass through some of the darkest underwater tunnels (Exits D and E). He'll also warn you that Abazigal has a guardian dragon (#14), but that the dragon is under a geas, and that if you were able to find his Scroll of Reversal, then you'd be able to free the dragon and open the way into Abazigal's inner sanctum (#16).
At the end of the conversation, the monk will die, and you'll find
Hindo's Hand on his corpse.
Cespenar in the
Pocket Plane can use the hand to upgrade
Hindo's Doom +3.
10 - Underwater Tunnel / Beholder Chamber
If you swim through this tunnel (which doesn't require a Breath Potion or a Rope), then you'll arrive in a small chamber populated by three elder orbs and a gauth. You'll earn 51,000 xp for defeating them, and you'll find a Gauth Eyestock on the corpse of the gauth. You might need the eyestalk for Iycanth's quest (#11).
If you hire the adventurers for Iycanth's quest, then they'll kill the gauth for you, but they'll leave the elder orbs alone, which will allow you to kill them later.
11 - Adventurer Statues
You'll discover statues of Bondari the Quick, Nanoc the Barbarian, and Tim Goldenhand here. When you approach them, Iycanth the Mad will teleport next to you. Iycanth will tell you that a gauth has been bothering his "most trusted friends" -- the eyes floating around in the cavern -- and he'll ask you to kill it and deliver its eyestalk to him. He'll offer you a Scroll of Reversal for this task, which you'll need to confront Abazigal (#16). You'll have a few ways to respond:
- You can complete Iycanth's task yourself. You'll have to kill three elder orbs and the gauth to get the eyestalk (#10), but when you deliver it to Iycanth, he'll hand over the scroll, and each character in your party will earn 30,000 xp.
- You can cure the adventurers here -- by casting Stone to Flesh on any of them (you'll find scrolls for this at #2, #6, #13) -- and then hire them to deal with the gauth (#10) for you. It won't make any difference if you promise them 100 gp or not. The adventurers will return five game days later, and in an amusing cut scene, they'll try but fail to kill you. Bondari will then load his game, and this time he'll simply give you
Bronze Pantalettes and the Gauth Eyestalk. When you deliver the eyestalk to Iycanth, he'll give you the Scroll of Reversal, and each character in your party will earn 30,000 xp.
Note: Kerrick in the smithy in
Amkethran can use the pantelettes to create the
Big Metal Unit and the
Big Metal Rod.
Another Note: The adventurers will only kill the gauth. If you want, you can still visit the beholder chamber (#10) and kill the elder orbs there.
- You can kill Iycanth for the scroll. If you threaten Iycanth during your first conversation with him, then he'll summon an eagle eye, a seeker, and two sentinels (worth 24,000 xp total) to attack you, and he'll teleport to his lab (#13). When you confront him there, he'll summon an eagle eye, an eye of the beholder, an eye of the dead, a gorgon eye, and a sentinel (worth over 45,000 xp total), and he'll finally attack you himself. You'll earn 20,000 xp when Iycanth dies, and you'll find the scroll on his corpse.
- You can pickpocket the scroll from Iycanth.
Note: If you cure the adventurers after defeating Iycanth's troublesome gauth (#10) yourself, then you'll only be able to let them leave the lair (worth 3 gp to you), or attack them (worth 75 xp).
12 - Secret Door
You'll only be able to open this door from inside Iycanth's lab (#13).
13 - Iycanth's Lab
To reach this lab, you'll need to swim through an underwater tunnel (Exit G). On the tables in the lab, you'll find a
Juggernaut Golem Page and a
Stone to Flesh Scroll.
Cespenar in the
Pocket Plane can use the golem page to create the
Juggernaut Golem Manual.
14 - Fll'Yissetat
You'll meet the green dragon Fll'Yissetat here. If you don't have the Scroll of Reversal (#11), then she'll just tell you to bow, and nothing will happen. But if you have the scroll, then you'll be given two choices:
- You can use the scroll to free Fll'Yissetat from her geas. This will earn each character in your party 10,000 xp. Once freed, Fll'Yissetat will offer you Abazigal's Wardstone. You can either accept it from her, or you can attack her for it (see below).
- You can attack Fll'Yissetat. You'll earn 60,000 xp when she dies, and you'll find Abazigal's Wardstone and a
Ring of Improved Invisibility: The Specter's Ring on her corpse.
15 - Wall of Force
The wall of force here will prevent you from entering Abazigal's inner sanctum (#16). There are two ways to remove it. If you freed Fll'Yissetat (#14) from her geas, then you'll only need Abazigal's Wardstone (#14). If you didn't free Fll'Yissetat, then you'll need Abazigal's Wardstone and the Scroll of Reversal (#11).
16 - Abazigal's Inner Sanctum
