The badges don't do anything other than maybe give you a sense of prestige. Just an award. Do with them as you like.

Yeah, one of the ironies of the game; when you need money you have none, later when you have everything you can't spend it all. Like Keill says, find as many encounters as you can and take everything to sell. As you get farther you'll find more than enough.

Was any kind of spell cast on him that would have caused such an effect at any time? There is a known permanent spell bug. That's assuming he isn't encumbered nor suffers ability damage.

Did you make sure to check for new spells on your cleric's spell inventory page in the character stat window?
