Article: DDO, Eberron, And I

Here's a great little overview article about Eberron (the setting for DDO) for those who want some more information about the world we'll inhabit.

Necromancy most definitely. My fave fantasy villain, hands down, is Szass Tam. He's deliciously evil and exceedingly smart. I find most fantasy villains pretty 1 dimensional, but Jean Rabe does a great job with him. I wish she'd do more with him.

Like everything in this world, it's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Again, this would just be an option that players can choose. No one would be forced into choosing it. The MUD we had this system in had an optional PvP system as well - which made it really interesting to say the least.

Mortality Alternatives...

As a long time PnP'er and MUD'der, one thing I've always found that MOG's lack is the risk of permanent death (or even a good death penalty). I dearly hope that'll change with DDO.

One of the best things I can think of in that regard was a MUD I played in for many years (The Magic Realm ...

You need to tailor the gaming sessions more to their style of play. If you know they'll do something absurd like charge an orc army, avoid orc armies for them to charge into.

Fun is #1. If people aren't having fun with a game, I see little point in playing it. Obviously you need tension, conflict and high drama, but fun should always prevail.

If your PC's do something stupid, let them. I've had sessions where players do all kinds of dumb things and it turns out to be ...

I'd actually reccomend staying away from narrative fiction as people tend to subconciously plagiarize it and it makes the adventure overly familiar. Any good writer worth his salt does a ton of non-fiction research so they can incorporate that knowledge into their fiction to make it that much more ...

Depending on their level, I'd be careful where you start them off. Kings are busy guys and don't have time for any old schmoe. I find it's always better for players to work their way up to that.

Why not meet the King's Captain of the Guard in the tavern and have him set them a task? If they succeed ...

If you really want to improve your stories/plots/conventions/archetypes I can't suggest enough that you read Joseph Campbell's, The Hero with a Thousand Faces ( http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0691017840/qid=1088658211/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/102-8237080-7995312 )

How about an alternate entrance? Say higher up the mountainside around the back? A dragon lair would be pretty big so an opening in the cavern could be higher up in the cavern where the gnome couldn't access or see, but the party could enter.

Just to make it interesting there could be a smaller ...
Necromancer is a wizard presige class. :)
Yes, but you could say that for almost everything listed. The four archetypes are wizard, warrior, priest, and thief. Everything else is a prestige class.

The Duel

This is a great little animated short of two-wizards dueling.
