I don't consider it cheating to use a piece of equipment that has a good plot behind it. The reason is thay in the game the powers of a mage and a cleric are limited by the weakness of their own body. All the long lived races, Dwarfs elves etc, would be mere children at age 20. This is true, but if you are lucky you can get through the game with these characters without any fighting. I have been though SoA with Minsc, Edwin, Keldorn and Viconia in my party.
