I was wondering the same thing, I just beat it today myself, and after about a minute I decided to actually EXPLORE THE AREA..I went all the way down then I went just below where the pool was in the first place and there is an item icon (sword/shield) and a portal above it.

You get the device from the ghost dude in the house of gems..you need to get to the point where you have a quest about getting a new gem for the mythal or something though which is pretty much later in the game though.
