I'd second this recommendation. I've found that EasyTutu (assuming you already own BG2) and the NPC project greatly enhance the BG1 experience. I'd recommend them even to first-time players.

No, just right when I try to initiate a dialogue with him. He announces that associating himself with filth like us was a mistake, quits and turns hostile :(

Exactly the same happens to Ajantis, although I have EasyTutu and the BG1 NPC Project installed. So you don't have any mods, at all?

Yeah, you might have a better experience with a different mod. Kelsey, Xan, and Solaufein may be better options for you. They are all polished, from what I gather.

When you finish the mod or get well into it, let us know how you like it. I've yet to try Tsujatha, though I've heard good things about it. While I'm not horribly interested in the romance component, I'd love to hear more about how the NPC fairs in terms of quality and quantity of dialogues ...

If you chose to leave him someplace, you can also quickly talk to him, before he collapses dead, inviting him into your party. These methods however are tricking the game, so you won't receive any further banter from him.
